Since 2019 Jānis Liepiņš is 1st kapellmeister at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, Germany. He's also a frequent conductor at the Latvian National Opera and Ballet since the 2014. Active as a guest conductor, Liepiņš has appeared with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Theater Chemnitz and Russian National Symphony Orchestra, as well as all the major professional orchestras of Latvia.

He has worked with many of the world's leading soloists and performers, including Marina Rebeka, Liudmyla Monastyrska, Vida Mikneviciute, Dinara Alieva, Inga Kalna | Benjamin Bernheim, Aleksandr Antonenko, Misha Didyk, Murat Karahan, Sergey Polyakov, Corby Welch, Dmitry Golovnin | Elena Zaremba, Olesya Petrova, Ramona Zaharia, Oksana Volkova Franco Vassallo, Igor Golovatenko, Vladislav Sulimsky, Andreas Bauer Kanabas and others.
